What character can this man not play? From the movie, Man on Fire to the new Gladiator II, and a host of other great films, I'm just in awe of this humble, well-loved human. I watched The Book of Eli a long while back (it was released in 2010) but apparently, I was not concentrating when I did, because last night, it was like I was watching it for the very first time.
Knowing the story of the high-priest
Eli in the bible, I began to wonder why they would name Denzel's character after him. A
character who crammed the whole bible into his brain to produce the one and
only copy after a catastrophic event had destroyed America and all other copies of the bible.

The story I remember most about Eli in the bible, was about
his wayward sons, and growing up in a Nigerian household, you never want your
character compared to that of the ‘sons of Eli’! It was easy to forget that Eli was one of the greatest mentors in the Old Testament. Without Eli, Samuel’s
story would not be as we know it today.
So, to me, it was just so profound that the writers of this movie
decided to go with the name ‘Eli’, and with such a storyline (no offence intended for anyone bearing the name Eli). I have not just been able to stop thinking
about it since last night. It is only God that can help us in our spiritual
service to Him, and to raise good natured, lovely children and loved ones
that will continue to uphold our legacy.
